En février 2006 doit sortir un album de Roots Manuva intitulé "Alternately Deep". à priori, on peut penser qu'il s'agira d'une compile des divers singles sortis suite à ce qui sera un des albums hip hop de 2005, "Awfully Deep". Ou bien une réédition du dit album avec un bonus CD compilant les inédits des dits singles, à savoir "Double Drat", sorti uniquement en download payant, "Too Cold", "Colossal Insight" et ce "Awfully Re/EP".
Bref, on se dit quand même que les titres de cet EP, presque tous exclusifs, seront probablement disponibles à nouveau et à moindre prix en début d'année prochaine. La question que l'on se pose alors est la suivante: ce "Awfully Re/EP" est-il vraiment indispensable pour les fêtes de fin d'année?
La version piano/live/cordes ("Lambeth Blues") de "Awfully Deep" avec Damon Albarn (Blur/Gorillaz) et le groupe de scène de Roots Manuva (The Manuvadelics) fera couler de l'encre, pour des raisons évidentes de marketing, alors qu'on dirait presque une production de rap français. Et ce n'est pas un compliment. Autant zapper cette collaboration rapidement, même si elle n'aura pas été complètement infructeuse (artistiquement parlant) grâce à sa version remixée, signée Metronomy, tout en retenue funk 80's. Anachroniquement très sympatique, elle donnerait même envie de ressortir ses fûtals trop larges certifiés d'époque. Venons-en donc aux faits, et à ce nouveau track, "Seat Yourself", featuring Ricky Ranking, proposé dans sa version originale, un bombardement electro boom bass dans une ambiance bien dark façon Amon Tobin, ou en version remixée, par Diplo, un peu de n'importe quoi electro-rigolo. Voilà de l'indispensable immédiat qui a intérêt à être présent sur la compile de février ou je ne m'y connais pas!
Enfin, pour conclure le maxi, on trouve une version edit/radio de "Awfully Deep", qui permet de se rappeler que le morceau de l'album est quand même une bonne petite bombe, à l'origine, et qui permet aussi de conclure que cet EP sera avant tout à réserver aux collectionneurs et aux fans impatients.

Bon, je ne reviendrai pas sur le marketing douteux utilisé pour vendre ce disque, à base de "hâtez-vous bandes de fans sinon vous allez rater l'édition limitée 2 CDs avec 5 démos, versions et tracks exclusifs", longuement lacéré dans ma chronique du nouvel album de Herbaliser, "Take London", disponible ci-dessous. Ne parlons donc que des 14 titres de ce "Awfully Deep" mélangeant allègremment dancehall, calypso, drum 'n' bass, breakbeat, electro, grime et hip hop, avec une bonne grosse dose de dub et un toast blues/soul par dessus.
Roots Manuva est depuis son premier album catégorisé par la presse comme un leader d'une scène dite "UK hip hop", qui n'a vraiment plus aucun sens. À l'origine, cela voulait simplement dire "du hip hop anglais qui vend quand même aux stazunis" tellement les rappeurs britanniques étaient ignorés outre-atlantique. Bien évidemment cela n'a plus aucun sens aujourd'hui que la scène principale, "là où ça se passe" comme diraient les faiseurs de modes, est "worldwide", tout simplement. Mais il faut bien l'admettre, Roots Manuva fait partie d'une catégorie à part, une sorte de "hors pistes" du hip hop anglais, dans laquelle on trouvait jadis Tricky, aujourd'hui Dizzee Rascal ou Wiley. Les plus novateurs doublés d'iconoclastes, en fait. Qui nient les traditions du mainstream années 80-pop-rock pour réinventer un hip hop qui n'attend qu'à fusionner avec des traditions vraiment roots et d'autres vraiment modernes. L'équivalent américain serait The Roots ou Outkast, plutôt inspirés funk et rock, eux. À l'opposé d'un Roots Manuva animé de vibes electro, dancehall et dub de Jamaique, éduqué à l'abus de jeux vidéos et donc branché synthés "lazer". Et pourtant avec quelque chose de commun qui les distingue du lot: avec le temps leurs productions se font de plus en plus universelles, intemporelles, rafraichissantes... accessibles! Voilà un bon résumé! "Awfully Deep" est le pendant anglais du "Speakerboxx/The Love Below" d'Outkast. Débrouillez-vous avec ça.

Un remix inédit de Roots Manuva, ça se fête!! (On n'arrête pas de le dire, mais: ils sont fort ces ninjas) Surtout quand il s'agit d'un hybride electro dancehall jungle brazil fiesta sur lequel Roots (permettez que je vous appelle Roots?) peut chauffer l'audience à son aise... Ambiance drum'n'carnaval, avec ce qu'il faut de cuivres pour réchauffer tout ça et finalement bien porter son nom malgré tout le côté "digital" de l'histoire: "Roots" indeed.

Roots Manuva en guest sur l'album de New Flesh de l'an dernier, personne ne l'avait repéré, sérieusement? Les beats, limite UK garage (façon The Streets, je veux dire -on s'y perd avec toutes ces catégories qui ne durent qu'une demie année-), en plus phat, épousent à la perfection la comédie musicale que développent les deux rappeurs à travers leurs alter-ego respectifs, un peu à la façon d'un Gonzalez. Un superbe track rigolo comme on aime caché au milieu d'un album, que Big Dada sont allés immédiatement nous ressortir, pour le plus grand plaisir de notre baladeur mp3.
